Mamiya 645
The Mamiya 645 is a medium format SLR system that exposes 6×4.5cm frames on 120 and 220 roll film, giving around 15 or 16 images per 120 roll. Introduced in the mid-1970s, it was positioned as a more compact and affordable alternative to 6×6 and 6×7 medium format systems, aimed at wedding, portrait and editorial photographers who wanted a larger negative than 35mm in a hand-holdable body.
At recent UK auction, Mamiya 645 bodies and kits have sold for roughly £110 to £480 at the hammer, with a median around £250 across the last few years of saleroom results. Prices today are firmly condition- and completeness-driven: clean examples with a working metered prism, a 120 back and the 80mm standard lens sit toward the upper end of that range, while body-only or cosmetically tired lots are where the £100–£200 results cluster. Older Christie's records from the early 2000s show the model selling for £200–£300, so the 645 has essentially held its value in nominal terms rather than appreciated.
