Mamiya 645

The Mamiya 645 is a medium format SLR system that exposes 6×4.5cm frames on 120 and 220 roll film, giving around 15 or 16 images per 120 roll. Introduced in the mid-1970s, it was positioned as a more compact and affordable alternative to 6×6 and 6×7 medium format systems, aimed at wedding, portrait and editorial photographers who wanted a larger negative than 35mm in a hand-holdable body.

At recent UK auction, Mamiya 645 bodies and kits have sold for roughly £110 to £480 at the hammer, with a median around £250 across the last few years of saleroom results. Prices today are firmly condition- and completeness-driven: clean examples with a working metered prism, a 120 back and the 80mm standard lens sit toward the upper end of that range, while body-only or cosmetically tired lots are where the £100–£200 results cluster. Older Christie's records from the early 2000s show the model selling for £200–£300, so the 645 has essentially held its value in nominal terms rather than appreciated.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Mamiya 645 worth today?

Based on UK auction hammer prices, a Mamiya 645 is worth roughly £110 to £480 depending on condition and what lenses and accessories are included, with a typical median around £250.

How much does a Mamiya 645 sell for at auction?

Recent UK saleroom results range from about £106 for a body-only or untested lot up to £480 for a clean, more complete kit, so most working examples sell for somewhere in the £200–£350 band.

Is the Mamiya 645 a good value in medium format?

Yes — the 645 remains one of the lower-price entry points into medium format SLR shooting, with the 6×4.5 negative giving significantly more detail than 35mm while the body and lens prices sit well below 6×7 Mamiya equivalents.

Does condition affect the price of a Mamiya 645?

Strongly. A serviced body with fresh light seals, working meter and a clean 80mm lens can reach the top of the range, while cameras with sticky shutters, dead meters or perished foam tend to sell for under £200.
