Ernemann HEAG XI Tropen (Tropical)

The Ernemann HEAG XI Tropen (Tropical) is an early-twentieth-century German folding plate camera made by the Dresden manufacturer Ernemann. The Tropen variant was built with a teak wood body and brass fittings, intended for use in hot and humid climates where standard leather-covered cameras were prone to deterioration. It sat in the upper end of Ernemann's plate-camera range when new.

At recent UK auction the HEAG XI Tropen has sold across a wide span, with hammer results ranging from £440 to £1,200 and a median of around £750. Condition of the wood, brass plating, bellows and shutter drives most of that spread — clean examples with intact bellows and a working shutter sit at the top of the range, while shop-worn or incomplete bodies sell for considerably less. As of 2026, the model remains a thinly traded collector item, so individual results can be volatile and the price a HEAG XI Tropen sells for at saleroom level is highly specimen-dependent.
