Leitz Leicaflex

The Leicaflex was Leitz's first 35mm single-lens reflex camera, introduced in 1964 and produced in Wetzlar. It positioned the company against established Japanese SLRs while retaining the mechanical build quality associated with Leitz, and it used an external CdS exposure meter rather than through-the-lens metering.

At UK auction the Leicaflex is a comparatively affordable entry into Leitz SLR collecting, with hammer prices for body-only examples in 2024–2026 running from around £38 to £500 and a median near £120. As of 2026 the value of a given example is highly condition-sensitive: rough, meter-dead bodies sell for under £70, while clean, fully working cameras with original strap and case can reach £250 or more. Buyers asking what a Leicaflex is worth today should expect most usable examples to sell for roughly £100–£250 at saleroom level, with exceptional outfits priced higher.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Leitz Leicaflex worth today?

At recent UK auction, Leicaflex bodies have sold for roughly £38 to £500, with a typical hammer price around £120 for a clean, working example.

How much does a Leicaflex sell for compared with the later SL?

The original Leicaflex generally sells for less than the Leicaflex SL because it uses an external, non-TTL meter; this keeps its price and value at the more accessible end of the Leitz SLR market.

Does the Leicaflex meter still work, and does it affect price?

Many surviving meters are inaccurate or dead due to age, and a non-working meter typically halves the price a body achieves at auction.

What lenses fit the Leicaflex?

It takes Leitz bayonet-mount SLR lenses; early one-cam Leicaflex lenses are the native fit, and later Leica R lenses may require attention to cam compatibility.
